ShelterBox and the JTI Foundation have been partners since 2012.

Across this time, the JTI Foundation has consistently provided support to ShelterBox in areas of capacity building and the delivery of aid to families and communities affected by disasters.

In the current phase of this partnership, the JTI Foundation will be supporting ShelterBox in three key areas.

The first is in managing the distribution of cash grants to people affected by disaster, which ShelterBox has been distributing alongside shelter support since 2019. In this time, it has become clear that cash grants accelerate the process of recovery when deployed alongside traditional shelter-based assistance.

The second area, learning and development, will see the JTI Foundation support ShelterBox training programs. Specifically, the JTI Foundation will continue funding Travel Security Training and Understanding Emergency Structures courses for around 30 ShelterBox staff – ensuring they have the expertise and knowledge to work effectively in the field.

Finally, a portion of JTI Foundation support will be used directly to fund interventions in the field, with up 1,350 individuals benefitting from a combination of shelter-based aid and cash grants.

The JTI Foundation has supported numerous ShelterBox interventions over the life of this long-standing partnership, in countries as varied as Malawi, Nepal, Sudan and Indonesia.

It is likely that during the current phase of the partnership, JTI Foundation support will be utilized in the Tigre region of Ethiopia, where around 3.6 million people remain in need of emergency shelter, as a result of civil war and climate change.
