The JTI Foundation’s relationship with ShelterBox dates to 2012, starting with a one-year pilot designed to improve the charity’s operational capacity. Based on the very satisfactory outcomes of this pilot, the JTI Foundation engaged in a three-year partnership until the end of 2016, and is funding further capacity building for another 12 months with another likely extension.
An estimated 85 million people around the world are displaced by natural distasters or conflict. This is possibly the greatest number since World War II andthe UN anticipates it could grow to 200 million by 2050. Support from the JTI Foundation is funding a mix of shelter and capacity building initiatives. Approximately 50% of JTI Foundation’s contribution will provide life-saving shelter and support to 2,000 vulnerable families (roughly 10,000 individuals) affected by disasters.
The other half will help boost ShelterBox’s capacity to respond by investing in Monitoring and Evaluation, ShelterBox Response Team recruitment and training and improving staff skills.
In addition to the 2,000 families benefiting directly, ShelterBox has set itself ambitious beneficiary targets in 2017, 2018 and 2019 of 135,000, 150,000 and 180,000 individuals respectively. The increased capacity and efficiencies the JTI Foundation is helping to make possible will help them achieve these targets. In the event of a major disaster, the JTI Foundation also stands by to provide additional support for country-specific emergency interventions. For example, emergency responses in Malawi, Malaysia, Sudan, Cameroon and Nepal have been supported since the partnership began in 2012
