In many rural areas of Morocco, access to reliable water remains a daily challenge. Distances to water sources, limited infrastructure and geographic isolation can make securing water for households both time-consuming and difficult.
Through ‘Abar’, communities across the country are gaining closer and more reliable access to water. The program has now completed 100 wells in 100 villages across 10 provinces, directly benefiting approximately 80,000 people. By bringing water sources closer to communities, Abar is helping improve conditions for daily life, hygiene and sanitation while supporting long-term community resilience.
The program has reached communities across Morocco, including areas continuing to recover from the devastating 2023 Al Haouz earthquake, helping strengthen essential infrastructure where it is needed most.
Abar‘s impact extends beyond the construction of wells. For example, in the community of Agdour Kik, the program combined the drilling of a new well with the renovation of a traditional hammam serving six douars and around 550 households. Together, these investments help improve access to water, hygiene and sanitation, illustrating how local infrastructure can strengthen everyday living conditions for entire communities.
Alongside infrastructure investment, Abar includes community engagement and awareness-raising activities that help communities take ownership of the new facilities and maintain them over time. The result is more than new water points. It is improved quality of life, stronger community resilience and better access to essential services for thousands of people across rural Morocco.
