Malawi suffered from severe flooding as a result.  In southern and central regions an estimated 922,900 people were affected across 14 districts, with 56 deaths reported, 577 injuries and more than 125,000 displaced.

ShelterBox, with JTI Foundation support, is set to provide aid to those affected by this disaster as follows:

  • Volunteer response teams have visited the areas worst affected by flooding to complete needs assessments, and have prepared recommendations for ShelterBox Response Team deployments;
  • 2,000 items of non-food aid, including shelter kits, water filtration stations, mosquito nets, kitchen sets, sleeping mats, blankets, and solar lamps will be distributed to the victims;
  • Temporary shelters for families will provide protection from extremes of weather, and ensure basic household-level privacy.  Providing basic shelter will allow the resumption of household and livelihood activities.

ShelterBox estimate that approximately 10,000 people in total will benefit from this concerted relief program, of whom 2,759 will benefit directly from the Foundation’s contribution.
