Tropical storms and flooding have struck Bangladesh for many years – with dwellings in low-lying parts of the country frequently washed away.
Local communities have frequently responded by raising the level of their dwellings – building living spaces on platforms supported by mud pillars – elevating them above the floodwaters that often rage below.
Since August 2024, heavy rainfall has caused devastating floods in Bangladesh. It has affected 5.8 million people and damaged over 300,000 homes. This has closely followed the damage from Cyclone Remal in May this year.
During an on-the-ground assessment in the immediate aftermath, ShelterBox technicians discovered that in severe flood situations, mud pillars were vulnerable to washing away, leading to the widespread collapse of dwellings.
A significant focus of this program is therefore to design and install more durable pillars, grounded in concrete bases, to provide a more robust foundation for rebuilt housing.
In addition to reconstructing the pillar-foundations of 600 dwellings in the district of Noakhali, ShelterBox will also rebuild 100 badly damaged homes from scratch, train-up local masons, and provide cash grants to families for the purchase of building materials and other essentials.
