Support to victims of the Cephalonia earthquake

A FAST AND APPROPRIATE RECOVERY FOR THE ELDERLY
In late January 2014, an earthquake followed by many aftershocks struck the Island of Cephalonia, in the Ionian sea, off the coast of Greece.

Although the physical damage was limited, it significantly affected older people in the community.

One of the only structures taking care of the elderly on the island, The Home, was severely damaged, leaving 42 of its residents homeless. To secure emergency shelter for the older victims, the pensioners were relocated to a sports center, poorly adapted to their everyday needs.

The JTI Foundation supported The Home by providing for the purchase of prefabricated accommodation better suited to hosting the elderly and responding to their needs. Once, The Home is rebuilt, the elderly will be relocated to their permanent housing and the prefabricated houses will be kept by The Home, increasing its capacity to care for the elderly in the short-term. In the long-term, these temporary housing units will provide the residents with an additional security in the event of another disaster.
