Between September 2011 and May 2013, and in conjunction with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the JTI Foundation supported UNDP Jordan’s program to deliver high quality technical assistance to government agencies. The program’s aims was strengthening the resilience of key civil defense buildings to seismic and flash flood risks in the governorates of Amman, Zarqa and Salt.
The program addressed several areas, including: the drafting of a new section in the Jordan Building Code, enhanced provisions for seismic structural assessment and retrofit design, transferring knowledge from international experts to the Jordan Engineers & Contractors Associations, and making improvements to the curriculum of universities.
The program delivered more resilient facilities, specifically redesigned to withstand earthquakes, and improved tools for disaster preparedness and response activities. As a result, civil defense buildings stand a better chance of remaining operational in the event of major disasters in the future.
