In March 2019, one of the most powerful tropical cyclones ever recorded in the southern hemisphere caused widespread destruction and loss of life across large areas of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe.
In central Mozambique, storm damage has been devastating. Estimates suggest that 446 people have died, more than 1,500 have been injured, and 1.8 million left homeless in areas affected by Cyclone Idai.

To help the victims of this devastating natural disaster, new implementing partner Solidar Suisse has joined the JTI Foundation to develop both water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and food-security programs.

Assessments are now underway in flood-affected areas of Mozambique, and the decontamination and rehabilitation of water-related infrastructure has started.  The program plan includes:

  • The cleaning and decontamination of 250 wells, and the rehabilitation of 60 water collection points and 6 small water supply systems;
  • The construction of 15 new water sourcesand construction or upgrade of 10 small water supply systems;
  • The rehabilitation of 8 public sanitation units in, for example, schools or clinics.

The food security elements of the program include the distribution of seeds and agricultural tools to approximately 3,500 families.

In total, Solidar Suisse estimates that up to 140,000 people will benefit from the WASH components of the program, and 17,500 from food-security activities in Mozambique.
