HFHI is a specialist in the construction and reconstruction of dwellings that are more resilient to the impact of future natural disasters.
The key to HFHI’s approach – known as PASSA (Participatory Approach for Safe Shelter and Awareness) – lies in engaging communities to collaborate in the design of local action plans appropriate to the environmental challenges facing them.
Into this, HFHI now intends integrating a second important program component – WASH or Water, Sanitation and Hygiene – recognizing that improved access to clean water is vital in raising standards of health and resilience generally.
With JTI Foundation backing, HFHI’s program aims to roll-out its broader PASSA-WASH approach to its National Organizations – these are the bodies key to implementing HFHI’s construction projects at the country level.
The program will continue with the launch of two regional ‘Trainings of Facilitators’ workshops – one in Africa and one in Asia – with the aim of bringing together 50 personnel from across HFHI’s National Organizations.
Output from these workshops will include the delivery of Community Action Plans – one per participating National Organization. These in turn will feed into the design and implementation of a number of pilot programs, each endorsed by the local community as being appropriate to their needs.
HFHI’s development of a comprehensive new PASSA-WASH toolkit will ultimately provide the basis for the training of around 550 national organization personnel, while a further 11,000 individuals should benefit from the implementation of small-scale pilot programs.
